TUESDAY, JUNE 11

Another day at the beach, still managing to keep it simple.

After finding the white stone stairs and pedestrian walkway leading to the town center, we explored a bit of Ermoupoli. Two- and three-story white washed, light yellow and soft pink homes provided some shade from the brilliant light and heat. Though Greece is an Orthodox country, there is a French school in Ermoupoli…and a few nuns running around.

Small boutiques, fresh produce stands, handmade olive oil soaps and specialty shops line the narrow, cobbled pedestrian streets. It feels a lot like an Italian village.
OUR BEACH DAY
Our beach day was longer than the day before, warmer and less windy. We took the 12:30 bus there, the 6:15pm bus back. The day was spent reading, swimming and sleeping.

We stopped for dinner in Ermoupoli, sitting outside in a passageway of stairs and landings that led to the dock. Boats passed below in the port. Light softened over the water. The 8:45pm bus took us back up the hill to Ano Syros as the sun set, a blush painting the pale city and ocean.
