TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2
Another tank top kind of day found us off to Castlefreke to go on the forest walk and to the beach. The trail we took follows a small stream, shaded completely by tall trees. As it widens, thick foliage blankets the sides of the trail. We emerged into a field, hills rising on the sides, cows (as usual) grazing.
Saffi had some fun jumping in and out of a small lake we passed. The trail stops at a two-lane paved road. We crossed and snuck under a fence into the field of high grass and rolling hills. The path was narrow, like an animal path. Saffi zipped ahead of us, disappearing over one hill to be found on the long, wide beach, barking at us to throw rocks.
And we obeyed, walking and throwing rocks for a long time. Tired, we plopped down on the sand. Saffi tried to dig a hole to China. The waves crashed, the beach was nearly ours alone. The sun kept us warm as we huddled together feeling grateful.
As we walked back to the car, we talked about our luck, and felt the near impossibility of absorbing such good fortune, such opportunity. Our ability to be grateful paled by comparison to these gifts.
We stopped at the Glendor Inn to get “linner” our name for lunch/dinner. It was only just after 3:00pm. But it was closed. We were told by the bartender that the chef was sick. A yummy primavera pasta, salad and garlic bread were prepared at home.
