WALKING AMSTERDAM: VAN GOGH, REMBRANDT HOUSE, HOLOCAUST MUSEUM

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8

Early Van Gogh, Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam
Early Van Gogh, Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam

With the goal of writing 365 blogs and keeping up day by day, well, every now and then a day drops right out of sight. That’s what happened today.

VAN GOGH, REMBRANDT AND BAGELS

But I do remember this…going to the Van Gogh Museum and marveling at how much better his paintings are in person than in a book.  Arriving at the Rembrandt House and finding the entrance fee ridiculously expensive, and feeling quite content to stand outside and imagine him living there.  Walking streets and canals until we found a bagel shop, where people mistook me for Dutch, something I have encountered all my life.  I think it’s my height.

NOT THE HOLOCAUST MUSEUM

We reached the Holocaust Museum so late in the day that the ridiculously high entrance fee didn’t seem to justify whatever the experience might be. Though who knows?  A park across the street was a nice way to wander back into the center of Amsterdam where we realized we wouldn’t make it to the Anne Frank House. We hadn’t made it to much in Amsterdam though we’d walked a lot.

It was dark and late when we returned to the hostel, taking a different path through a university, past a gym, and through some hedges before we reached the parking lots.
